چکیده

We show that a network of quenched random grain boundaries, terminating in poly-merized patches containing excess disclinations, destabilizes the at phase of sparsely poly-merized membranes, in contrast to membranes completely polymerized in the liquid state. We argue that many of these grain boundaries will buckle, even in the absence of excess disclinity, leading to a glassy wrinkled phase consistent with recent experiments on partially polymerized vesicles by Mutz et al.

Grain Boundary Buckling and Spin Glass Models

A systematic investigation is presented of grain boundaries and grain boundary networks in two dimensional flexible membranes with crystalline order. An isolated grain boundary undergoes a buckling transition at a critical value of the elastic constants, but, contrary to previous findings, the shape of the buckled membrane is shown to be asymptotically flat. This is in general not true in the c...

study, without prior permission or charge

It is well known that buckling instabilities occur when elastic solids are subject to compressive stresses. However, this does not preclude the occurrence of instabilities in systems subject to global tensile loads. Such tensile instabilities may be caused by certain discontinuities (geometrical or material) which re-distribute the stresses applied on its boundary, generating local compressive ...

Instability Phenomena in Lipid Bilayers and Lipid-DNA Complexes

Lipid bilayers membranes, positioned between two solutions, are the barrier of the cell and its internal components (organelles). Membranes define the cell limit and, by allowing the existence of two different solutions in close proximity, enable their functions. Membranes participate in various biological processes such as cell-cell adhesion, controlled ions transfer, and signal transduction. ...

CORRIGENDUM: Elasto-plasticity in wrinkled polymerized lipid membranes

The author neglected to cite a previously published related paper which reports that, when partially polymerized membranes suffer a wrinkling transition, the distribution of wrinkles is lognormal 1. In addition, some of the data reported in the manuscript were previously reported in reference 1. The data in Figure 1 are taken from Figure 3a and Figure 5 in ref. 1; Figure 2b is adapted from Figu...

Spherical Crystallography: Virus Buckling and Grain Boundary Scars

— Ordered states on spheres require a minimum number of topological defects. For the case of crystalline order, triangular lattices must be interrupted by an array of at least 12 five-fold disclination defects, typically sitting at the vertices of an icosahedron. For R >> a, where R is the sphere radius and a the particle spacing, the energy associated with these defects is very large. This ene...
